WarData.net   ~   American Civil War Reading List

The volume of literature on the Civil War is vast and growing more so on a daily basis. Only a few of the more important and recent books will be discussed here.

Nosworthy, Brent, Bloody Crucible of Courage: Fighting Methods and Combat Experience of the Civil War, (New York: Avalon Press, 2003), 752 p.
The sub-title tells more about this book than its title. It is an in-depth analysis of the weapons and tactics of the Civil War. The author reviews the state of infantry, cavalry, and artillery tactics and weapons in Europe and America in the decades before the Civil War. He then shows how effective the tactics were in practice, and how they were improved by actual experiences.

Bowden, Scott, and Bill Ward, Last Chance for Victory: Robert E. Lee and the Gettysburg Campaign, (Cambridge, MA: DaCapo Press, 2001), 624 p.
An excellent in-depth analysis of Lee and the decisions he faced in the Gettysburg campaign. The authors show how Lee's actions in this controversial campaign were shaped by his experiences and by the exigencies of war.
